The Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) had its start in February 1945 as a civilian emergency hospital known as PCAU-5 (Philippine Civilian Affairs Unit), with 100-bed capacity and housed in a borrowed school building at España St. Manila. On August 1, 1945, it was placed under the Bureau of Health and named as North General Hospital, being north of Pasig River.

The year 1947 marked the beginning of North General Hospital as a training hospital and started training doctors, nurses and technical men under the Department of Health.

In October 1957, the hospital transferred to a new facility at San Lazaro Compound in Rizal Avenue, Sta. Cruz, Manila. By virtue of R.A. 4264 passed on June 19, 1965, it was renamed Dr. Jose R. Reyes Memorial Hospital in honor of Dr. Jose R. Reyes, its Director from March 16, 1948 to January 24, 1964.

In 1974, the hospital was designated as a Medical Center in line with the Hospital Development Project of the Department of Health. The hospital was subsequently renamed Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) on December 3, 1982, pursuant to Executive Order No. 851.

Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center is an acute, short-term illness, tertiary level, teaching-training hospital catering to non contagious/non communicable diseases and has an authorized 450-bed capacity and 35 bassinets. It is housed on a five-storey building, located at San Lazaro Compound, Rizal Avenue, Sta. Cruz, Manila, Philippines.

From a fledging section of the North General Hospital way back in the 1960’s, the Department of Surgery has risen to become the banner department of the new Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center.

The Department of Surgery being one of the first recognized training program in the Philippines, has produced world-class surgeons known in local and international community. To maintain this field of excellence, the department has been doing reorganization and upgrade of staff, to go beyond the local standard of training curriculum.

The Department of Surgery now serves the surgical needs of 100 surgery patients at any one time and boasts of the latest in surgical laparoscopic and endoscopic equipment that are otherwise only available at private tertiary medical centers. The department conducts regular in-house and outside surgical missions to reach out to the surgical needs of the common people.

The Department of Surgery is highly sectionized with fellowship programs in Neurosurgery, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, Colorectal Surgery and Pediatric Surgery.
